Paul Casbon

Director | Patent Attorney

Paul is a European Patent Attorney and Chartered UK Patent Attorney, with a degree in Physics with Astrophysics. Paul joined Greaves Brewster after 25 years at a private practice firm near London, of which 18 years were as a partner.

Paul has helped clients with their IP rights in a wide range of physics-related fields including software and computers (e.g. telecommunications, digital security, blockchain, networking, routing and packet queuing, natural language processing, browser-executable code), vehicle suspension components and control, medical devices, oil and gas production, gas detection, ground heat exchangers, newspaper printing, non-destructive testing, and electric power systems for submarines to name a few. He has extensive experience in opposition and appeal proceedings at the European Patent Office.

Over the years Paul has assisted a variety of clients to monetise their patents. For example, Paul represented a UK SME that was purchased by a US-based multinational largely on the strength of an international patent strategy that had been developed for the SME. Paul worked with a UK University to create a telecommunications-related patent portfolio that was sold to US company, and to other UK and European companies in the telecommunications field.

Paul has also developed strong relationships with overseas IP attorneys. He takes a pro-active approach to help adapt clients’ IP strategies to suit Europe and the UK. Overseas clients value his frequent accessibility outside normal UK working hours, especially for conference calls and last-minute new filings.

Since 2009 Paul has been a contributor to the CIPA Guide to the Patents Act published by Sweet & Maxwell, which is the foremost guide to patent law used by UK patent attorneys.

Paul is based in the East Midlands, within easy reach of Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham and Leeds. Paul also travels regularly to London to meet clients, and is looking forward to spending time in the South West. He is a frequent attendee at conferences including AIPLA, IPO and LES, and enjoys visiting clients at their offices.
